HAWKER CULTURE: SINGAPORE

A proud tradition that has shaped the Singaporean identity, Singapore’s hawker cuisine is undoubtedly at the top of any visitor’s must-do list. What is it about these gastronomic institutions that inspire such national pride in local Singaporeans?

In August 2018, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced plans to submit the island nation’s hawker culture for inscription to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:

“Hawker culture is not just about the food. It is also about our hawker centres being social and community spaces for people from all walks of life. It is also about our hawker food heritage, and the people behind the food – our hawkers.”

Singapore’s hawker culture represents the hard work, tradition, heritage and passion of a multicultural population. Show your support for Singapore’s UNESCO bid for hawker culture today!

We want to invite you to submit photos representing the essence of what Singaporean hawker culture means to you. Find out more details here.

Co-judged by National Geographic’s celebrity food expert and chef David Rocco, and Singapore’s food guru KF Seetoh, the photo competition coincides with a special vignette series exploring Singapore’s hawker culture, and the traditions passed down from one generation to the next.

CONTEST

Share with us #WhatMakesSG hawker culture an integral part of Singapore’s unique history through the #OurHawkerCulture photo contest!

#WhatMakesSG Hawker Culture a national treasure? A riot of flavours? The taste of nostalgia?

One thing is for sure, it is not just about the food. #OurHawkerCulture also celebrates time-honoured techniques and traditions passed down through the generations. Hawker centres are community dining spaces where Singaporeans from all walks of life come together to enjoy a meal.

National Geographic, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information, called on Singaporeans to share what Singapore Hawker Culture means to them and to pledge their support, creating a visual spread for the rest of the world. This is in support of Singapore’s nomination of Hawker Culture for inscription into UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Through individual lenses, we see that Singapore’s hawker culture is so much more than just a quick, affordable meal. The entries are a mix of family, tradition and vibrant flavours tossed together in a culinary art form.

From nearly 3,000 entries, judges have whittled it down to just four finalists. These powerful images conjure up the sights, sounds, and smells that make #OurHawkerCulture a delicious source of national pride, worthy of UNESCO heritage recognition.
